Huckabee is Off Base

Mike Huckabee has decried Natalie Portman for glamorizing having a child out of wedlock. But Ms. Portman is an adult, and it doesn't appear that she is glamorizing the fact that she is pregnant out of wedlock. The thing that is horrifying to me are shows glamorizing teen motherhood. It is not that I feel that teenage girls who become pregnant should be branded "sluts," but nor should becoming pregnant in one's teen years be seen as a goal to pursue. Not only that, but the girls chosen to be on these programs do not seem like the kind who are going to try and put their child first. They seem like self-absorbed Paris Hilton/Kim Kardashian wannabes.
Natalie Portman is not a bad role model. I doubt that anyone even thinks about the fact that she and her boyfriend are having a baby out of wedlock--other than the likes of Mike Huckabee. The people who should be receiving a verbal lashing are the jerks who created the "Teen Mom" shows. They don't care what kind of a message they're sending to impressionable teenage girls who may well think they can get their 15 minutes of fame by getting pregnant and getting on such a show themselves.

Really hate rotating shifts. Fibro was horrible last nite. Felt like barb wire wrapped around arms, shoulders. Early AM shift worst for me.

RT @bbcdavideades Gadaffi insists he's not Pres. so can't stand down. BUT insisted I call him Brother Leader when I interv'd him in 2007.

Self Injury Awareness Day

http://drdeborahserani.blogspot.com/2011/03/march-1st-is-self-injury-awareness-day.html

My friend Faycin A Croud shared this information. I kept the picture because it looks something like a young me. I have been self-harming for as long as I can remember. I used to hit myself as a child. I started cutting in my teens.

People who SI are often trying to:

* Distract emotional pain
* End feelings of numbness
* Calm overwhelming feelings
* Maintaining control
* Self-punish
* Express thoughts that cannot be put into words
* Express feelings for which there are no words

What are the types of self-injury?

* Cutting
* Burning
* Picking at skin
* Interfering with wound healing
* Hair-pulling
* Hitting
* Scratching
* Pinching
* Biting
* Bone-breaking
* Head-banging

It enrages me when people say that those who self-harm are merely engaging in "attention seeking behavior." Indirectly, I suppose that's true. It was a cry for help in my case. But first and foremost it was an attempt to defuse overwhelming feelings and replace emotional pain with physical pain. Sometimes it was also self-punishment.
Self-harm is a complex issue. I am glad there is a day dedicated to educating people about it.
